Nothing beats an afternoon outing with grandma, good food, and family gossip. Last week I took her to one of my new favorite lunch spots, Blue Star Cafeteria on Burnet Road. The fancy-casual diner seats the trendy central Austin business folk in comfortable booths, along a chic 1950s style counter next to a case of decadent cakes and pies, or on a cozy umbrella-covered patio.
I love to see cute diners being fancy, and I am starting to discover more and more of them in popular shopping areas around town. Some common menu items include crab cakes, chicken salad sandwiches, and spinach salads with a multitude of fixings and homemade vinaigrette dressings.
I took it easy on my last visit to Blue Star by ordering a simple garden burger on a sweet hamburger bun with roasted garlic hummus, guacamole, field greens, and carrots. The side options are cozy too; choose between coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, pea salad, mixed field greens, or star fries. While the star fries sounded like the most adorable version of the fried potato, the house salad sounded even more delicious and flavorful with field greens, gorgonzola, dried cranberries, and toasted almonds in balsamic vinaigrette.
Grandma had her own simple, but decisive, chicken salad sandwich on sourdough bread with garden basil pesto, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and red onion.
I missed out on cake and pie this time around, but the tres leches and carrot cakes looked outrageously tasty. I’ll just have to put them on my “to eat” list for next time.
